Linvin Grithinshield from Quest for the Red Sapphire

Tell me a little about yourself and the world you live in.

I am originally from here in Fraylic, the capital city of Sartan.  When I was twelve I was sent to be raised in Valia.  There I was trained as a warrior and joined the army.  I advanced rapidly until I became commanding general.  Now I have been summoned home after my father’s disappearance to run the family merchant empire.  Fraylic is the most prosperous city in the entire world of Lavacia.

Tell us your most closely guarded secret?

My Father had some hidden plan for my future.  That was the reason I was sent to be trained.  Somehow that education has proved of little use in my present condition.  There feels like there is something more I should be doing.

Tell us about your single most important memory. What was it and how does it affect you now?

I remember being sent away as a child.  My mother was set against it but my father had his own plan.  As mother wept, we headed for Valia where I would be trained by Sedemihcra, the Master of Warfare.  Now that I am home, I see my mother’s plans for me had more to do with society and establishing a legacy.

What type of person are you? Are you a hero or do you shy away from conflict?

I have been ruthlessly trained to stand tall when others run and to fight for what is decent regardless of the odds.  That does not mean I am a fool.  It is through careful preparation that I persevere in all forms of battle.

Do you have any hobbies, any special talents?

I am surprisingly good at accounting.  That has come in handy since taking over the family business.  I have found some irregularities in the books in need of attention.

And in that line, what would be your ideal day?

An ideal day would be one in which business was running smoothly without me and I could turn my attention to my Father’s disappearance.

Do you have anyone close to you, any family or friends of interest?

My Uncle Anvar is like a father to me.  He is wise and mysterious but trustworthy beyond reproach.  Anvar is always there for me to lean on in troubling times.  In many ways I am closer to him than to my own mother.  Yet, even as close as we are, I know he still keeps secrets from me.

What is your most prized possession?

Sadly, it is not in my possession.  My father’s sword, Falconfeather is a sentient being which embodies the living soul of Talana, Queen of the Falcons.  The blade will never break, dull or chip, even though it is carved from the great beast’s thigh bone just after her demise.  The weapon is light as a feather and responds to the commands of only my father or me.  Father had it with him on his last trip.  I fear he and the sword are lost forever.

What initially spurred your actions in this story? Obviously it had to start somewhere for you, give us an idea of where that starting point is and where it all started.

I was in command of the Valian armies and had just defeated three separate goblin armies in successive days.  Then a note arrived from my mother pleading for me to come home after Father’s disappearance.  I resigned my commission and sped home.

How do you envision your future?

If the future goes the way my mother would have it, I will take an aristocratic wife and stay in Fraylic.  We will raise a family to take over the business when I am gone.  I, personally, find that scenario to be drab and a waste of my years of experience.  There must be something of more substance out there waiting for me.  This life cannot be all there is.

Tell us where we can read more about you?

Read “Quest for the Red Sapphire”.  The sequel will be out shortly called “Sapphire Crucible”

Author:  Rival Gates

The sequel, “Sapphire Crucible” will be out in 2014.  And here is the cover for the sequel to this adventurous tale!

Character Days: Alicia Hargreaves from Beware the Seventh Wave

Welcome back to Character days!  This is where I interview a character from a book, about 1 to 2 times a week.  If you're an author and you'd like your character interviewed, just send me an email!

Characters Days: Alicia Hargreaves from Beware the Seventh Wave by Maureen Gregory

Tell me a little about yourself and the world you live in.

Where do I start? Well, I am extremely successful, intelligent, articulate, beautiful and given my many attributes, quite modest considering.  I live in a quintessential English market town in the Peak District.
****

Tell us your most closely guarded secret?

You must be joking! I would not want to jeopardize future plans by discussing past secrets.
****

Tell us about your single most important memory.  What was it and how does it affect you now?

My first important memory was winning all the red rosettes and cups at pony club camp on my very expensive show pony whose name I soon forgot as mummy and daddy bought me an even more expensive one the following year. It made me realize that money does indeed bring happiness.
****

What type of person are you?  Are you a hero or do you shy away from conflict?

I can not stand the hero/heroine types. What are they trying to prove? I am all for saving myself, other people and their silly problems do not interest me. I do however relish conflict, winning a disagreement gives me a buzz, and I always win.
****

Do you have any hobbies, any special talents?

I ride event horses and I win, win, win.
****

And in that line, what would be your ideal day?

To win, win, win. The thought of losing out to a lesser person fills me with horror, not that it is likely to happen.
****

Do you have anyone close to you, any family or friends of interest?

I don’t do family or friends, however, there is one person who is of immense interest.
****

What is your most prized possession?

Myself
****

What initially spurred your actions in this story?  Obviously it had to start somewhere for you, give us an idea of where that starting point is and where it all started.

There would be no story without me!
****

How do you envision your future?

Now that would be telling!
****

Tell us where we can read more about you?

I believe some author person has mentioned me in their novel Beware the Seventh Wave.

Back Seat Gamer: Disney Duck Tales Remastered Review

Back Seat Gamer: Disney Duck Tales Remastered

Intro:
As a young girl who was born in the 80's and grew up in that and the 90's I have fond memories of watching Disney cartoons that were awesome.  In fact I watched more cartoons then I did live action shows - I was a dork.  I love that these shows are on DVD now so I can rewatch them, though I'm still waiting for some like Aladdin.  Duck Tales was a lot of fun to watch and it was interesting how they managed to make a greedy jerk into a lovable character who really did care about his family in spite of his flaws.  I especially loved the spin-off which became Darkwing Duck, but that's another subject.

Summary:
It's just another day in Duckburg as the Beagle Brothers are trying to rob the moneybin and kidnap Huey, Dewey and Louie.  In the process of saving his nephews, Scrooge McDuck discovers a secret in one his paintings which will lead him to even more treasure and riches.  Unless, of course, someone else gets there first.

Thoughts:
From the opening screen through the entire game, this game makes you think of the show.  They have everything!  All the voices, as far as I can tell, are the same.  All the characters you vaguely remember from a childhood of being glued to the Disney channel are there and they all have a moment to themselves, reminding you about their various loves and plot points.  Gizmoduck, Launchpad, Webby, Duckworth... even Bubba Duck!  The team that made this game obviously know the show and make places for these characters that are useful and add to the fun, rather then just having them be part of the set in the background.

The music is catchy as heck and seems to be this perfect marriage between 8 bit midi sounding notes and remixes of the original show scene.  If you listen closely you can catch the main refrain in that techno theme and then it will never leave your head.  But it does a good job of walking the line and never quite becoming annoying.  You won't mind having these themes in the back of your mind while you're eagerly awaiting work to be over so you can play more.   (This actually means a lot coming from me as I have a tendency to get annoyed with traditionally sounding video game soundtracks.)

Apparently an added bonus in this game - my partner was sure it wasn't in the original - you can swim in the money bin!  Also, as you go through the levels, your collected treasure is added to the money bin too.  My only wish is that the level of coins would have changed, just because it would have been amusing.

How Much I Played:
Pffft.  You don't know me too well, but this is the sort of game I royally SUCK at.  Anything that involves the simple mechanics of having to time jumps onto villains' heads and the next platform spell out doom for me even at the simplest setting.  Sonic the Hedgehog tortured me with this as a kid and I just know from watching this game that I would have died so many times in the first level I would have given up from pure frustration.  So yeah, I didn't play any of this one, sorry.  Instead I was sewing and watching and occasionally doing the backseat driving of "Jump there, that thing, hit him with that!"  It's still a very enjoyable game to watch, especially if you've seen the show and have fond memories of the characters.

Grade:
Old school remastered fun!
(Hmm, maybe I should come up with some sort of rating system....)

Back Seat Gamer: DMC Review

This is not directly writing related, it's more an exercise for me to keep me writing during a huge and hectic schedule of sewing and getting ready for conventions.  So I've decided that I'm going to post video game reviews as we play games.  They're going to probably be few and far between, but what the heck, I need practicing writing reviews.

So, I'm going to call it...

Back Seat Gamer

Intro:
For those who don't know me, I'm not a huge gamer, but I live in a world of video games with a partner who used to work at a video game store and now writes reviews and articles.  She collects games and has had them all her life - so some of it has rubbed off on me more or less.  I do play video games, but I more prefer to watch her play them because she's much better then me and does crazy things like try and get all the coins and max out the trophies.  All in all it balances out and games are a lot of fun to watch and occasionally play.

Now, for reference sake, I have played the other, older Devil May Cry games to a degree and have loved them, so I was eager to see how this different 'take' turned out.

DMC - Devil May Cry

Summary:
A reboot of the original Devil May Cry series, DMC retells the story of Dante and Virgil as the twin children of a power demon and an angel.  Dante, who has just learned of his interesting past, decides to help his newly found brother take down a powerful demon lord whose been controlling their entire city.  Hack'n'slash delight style.

Thoughts:
I'm going to preface this by saying that I have a special place in my heart for the type of cheese that this series has.  I love the corniness and the complete acceptance that this is not a serious game.  It's about beating your way through levels, button mashing enemies into oblivion and accidentally learning the moves along the way.  The game doesn't take a huge amount of skill, but you can make it harder if you want and in the meantime the ride that the story provides is hella enjoyable and keeps you laughing because - yes - they did just do that.

I know, originally, there was a lot of complaints because the series was being rebooted and Dante was given a more 'emo' look and wah wah.  After playing the game, I'm happy with it.  This Dante is younger and less experienced with demons.  He looks how I would expect him to given the story and world we're presented with; in this world the white hair, buffer frame and stark red jacket would have just stood out too much.  To give them credit, the studio that made the game was specifically told to change his look and they did think about it and in turn did a great job creating a cohesive world.  That and just because he wears black and has short black hair doesn't mean he's 'emo'.  He didn't act emo, he wasn't emo.  He was just a different version of Dante who - I think - could stand on his own next to the original and the two of them would be awesome drinking buddies.

Cat.  This game introduced a female character who plays the part of telling you how to do things and leading you to the main plot of the game.  She's interesting and I found myself genuinely caring about her in spite of a lack of 'use' in the game.  Unfortunately she only interacts with Dante in a limited fashion and it's kept contained to leading you to Virgil and occasionally being the trigger to get you out of situations.  Sadly her back story is only explained and doesn't play a huge or key part in the overall plot and she was kind of replaceable - which made me feel like they could have done so much more with her.  I wanted to play a game as her and have her plot more developed and maybe tied into the overall game rather then just someone Virgil saved who devotes her life to him.  I mean the idea of a child who spent her life hiding in limbo - the demon world or between world in this game - and her ability to do magic with her awesome ass spray paint seemed kind of like wasted potential.  But for all intents and purposes the game did a good job of making you care about her when Dante did and therefore the ending (which I won't spoil) hit all the right notes.

The art style in this game was awesome and while the demons fit the overall mood I did find myself missing the harlequin style of demons from the original game.  But that was honestly just a minor thing - the art direction here pretty much made up for it.  Just a different style, which I'm ok with.

Overall, I loved the game and I really hope they make more in this universe with the same team.  I would honestly have to say that this is one of my favorite types of games and I was not disappointed.

How much I played:
I played about halfway through the game.  When I got to the NOT-Bill-O'Reilly boss battle my partner was trying it and I told her she could keep going, because I recognized it was not the type of boss battle I'd be good at, even at the lowest/easiest setting :P

Grade:  Awesome and favorite!

Two New Reviews for Seeking the Storyteller!

This information arrived a bit earlier this week, but I decided to wait so I could put it in it's own post!

Seeking the Storyteller has been reviewed on two sites, which you can check out.

The first is Dale's Place, which also includes a give away if you'd like to try for a free ebook copy!
"All in all, I found myself gripped in the story as it progressed, and looked forward to those moments where I could pick it up and read. When that happens, you know you have a gem in the making."

The second is Lit Pick.
"...the ragtag team Walsh and Lawrence created of demons, humans, hunters and victims was fascinating. I kept on wanting more and more of it."

Time to go celebrate and work on costumes while plotting my next novel (which is about halfway through the first draft?  Or so?)

Character Days! Eden Knightly from Eden's Mark

Due to how popular this feature is, I'm changing it to being called Character Days!  It will still primarily be on Wednesdays, but for the weeks where I'm double booked there will be a separate post on Thursday!

(As always, if you'd like your character interviewed on my blog, please don't hesitate to send me an email.)

Eden Knightly from Eden's Mark

Tell me a little about yourself and the world you live in.
I live in a crazy world filled with vampires, fairies, mages, and shifters. This world was something out of a children’s story when I arrived. Ellethny is a realm outside of the human world I used to live in. Creatures from Ellethny portal to the human world in escape of the evil rule of Circenn and the darkness that is consuming it.

Tell us your most closely guarded secret?
I have a birthmark on my wrist that makes me the Chosen One. I am prophesized to stop Darkness, we will see how that turns out! Also, Circenn is my GRANDMOTHER! I know, insane right?

Tell us about your single most important memory.  What was it and how does it affect you now?
I don’t know that I have an important memory I hold dear yet. If I had to give one…it would have to be Gregor. Our first meeting in the woods behind my house still gives me goosebumps. Apparently, I changed his destiny that day and every day thereafter.

What type of person are you?  Are you a hero or do you shy away from conflict?
I am the type of person who hates conflict. I am as normal as they come…well used to be anyways. Now, I am this uber magic mama who will cut down anyone who tries to harm my family and friends.

Do you have any hobbies, any special talents?
If you count that I am the Chosen One as a special talent, then yes I have some. I get the cool abilities from each race in Ellethny. I can see futures and make things out of thin air with my fairy talent—I also have killer wings, just saying. I have super speed and acute senses with my vampire blood, I use magic like the mages, and have found out I can shift into animal forms. It is kind of cool being me! Um…mostly. Having people want to kill you really isn’t but hey, what ya going to do right?

And in that line, what would be your ideal day?
My ideal day would be chilling in my meadow with my vamp resting in the brook that flows through it.

Do you have anyone close to you, any family or friends of interest?
That’s a loaded question! Gregor is a vamp that becomes something of a habit for me. Valora and Lexington are my aunt and uncle who have kept me safe all these years…until the nightmares began. Koren and Maiya are Gregor’s shifter friends who have come to my aid more than once. The last person in my life is my eccentric uncle Amend. He is the High Mage and is teaching me how to use my powers. Amend is the family member you purposefully forget to invite over for the holidays,

What is your most prized possession?
My Aunt Val gave me a ring that my father made for my mom on their wedding day. It was the only thing she had left of my mom’s, so it was huge for her to give it up to me. It has four stones in it that has symbols carved on top of each telling a story of love. It will forever be precious to me.

What initially spurred your actions in this story?  Obviously it had to start somewhere for you, give us an idea of where that starting point is and where it all started.
My life was like anybody else’s-- until I began having these terrifying nightmares of creepy shadow guys with white eyes chasing me. When I would wake up, my birthmark would burn like crazy. Finally, Val and Lex told me everything and brought me to Ellethny.

How do you envision your future?
Hopefully living with Gregor in our meadow with all my family and friends surrounding us. At this point though, I cannot say.

Tell us where we can read more about you?
You can read the beginning of my journey in Eden’s Mark on Amazon, Createspace, and B&N.
Eden’s Darkness, book two in the Ellethny series, will be out Spring 2014, so check it out too!

Character Wednesdays: Tom Kendall from The Mackenzie Dossier and More!

Welcome to Character Wednesdays!

You know the drill by now, this is where I interview characters from different books, novels and short stories.  As always: If you're an author and you would like your character to be interviewed, please send me an email.

Tom Kendall from The Mackenzie Dossier, The Marinski Affair, Epidemic and A Killing in the City

All of the books are available in a boxset!

Tell me a little about yourself and the world you live in.

So what do you want to know, where I was born, stuff like that? Well I was brought up in New York, on the east side. I went to Brook Street School. Miss Lacey, she was my teacher. She was small, but she was tough. You didn’t cross her. Discipline you see, that’s the answer, discipline. You don’t get that now. After school I had a few dead end jobs, working in a store, and then I joined the New York Police Department. I was 17. My father had been a Police Sergeant with the 22nd Precinct, and so had his father before him. Even my uncle had been a police officer in Chicago. Then about ten years ago I left the department and started up as a Private detective, and haven’t looked back since

Tell us your most closely guarded secret?

That’s a tough one, I mean if I told you and you blabbed then where’s the secret? Know what I mean. As long as you don’t tell anyone, and if it gets out I’ll know where it came from, I guess it would be how much I rely on my business partner Mollie. I’d be lost without her, but you don’t tell her that you hear. I’d never live it down.

Tell us about your single most important memory.  What was it and how does it affect you now?

Ah that’s easy. It’s a few years ago now. I was fifteen I think, something like that anyway. Dad had just made Sergeant, and he was being awarded a medal for bravery. My dad, I couldn’t believe it. He was just an ordinary everyday kind of a kind, or at least that’s what I’d thought. He had tackled an armed gunman, and saved a young girl’s life. That’s when I knew I wanted to be a police officer.

What type of person are you?  Are you a hero or do you shy away from conflict?

I’m no hero, not like my dad. I don’t go looking for trouble. I’m not really the tough guy type, could lose some weight for a start. But if there’s trouble brewing I won’t turn away. I’ll face up to it and hope to give a good account of myself.

Do you have any hobbies, any special talents?

Guess I’d have to answer no to that. I’m just an ordinary guy doing a job. I like the occasional scotch, and I enjoy all the wrong kinds of food. Mollie keeps telling me to eat healthily. She’s right of course, but I do enjoy a burger and fries. Sorry I digress. I Iike most kind of music, but I suppose fifties rock and roll would be favourite. That’s about it I suppose. I did start to learn the guitar about a million years ago, but I had to give it up, I’ve got two left hands you see. No not really, I’m joking.

Do you have anyone close to you, any family or friends of interest?

Well I’ve got no family, not any more. Dad died back in 1990, and mum she left us about six years ago. I think I’ve got a cousin in Oregon, or somewhere, haven’t heard from her for years. Probably wouldn’t know her if I passed her in the street. So now apart from Mike, you know Mike’s Bar, the one relationship I value most must be Mollie, my business partner. Oh it’s not one of those sentimental relationships, and I tell you I would not admit this to her, so you keep it quiet. Truth be known I’d never manage without her. I mean not only does she make great coffee, and keep the office organised, we talk a lot, you know. And she comes up with all kinds of ideas. She lifts my spirit when I’m low. She is one good friend. There is one other special relationship, and that’s my friendship with John. He writes down all of my cases you know. It was my idea, and don’t let anyone tell you different, but I don’t have the time to record everything so John does it for me.

What is your most prized possession?

There’s two, my dad’s Night stick, from the department, and his medal. They have pride of place in my office. I would hate to lose them you know. Oh there’s one other thing, my first watch. My mother gave it to me when I was twelve or something. It doesn’t work any longer, and the glass is cracked, but on the back there’s an engraving – To Tom, with love from mum.

What initially spurred your actions in this story.  Obviously it had to start somewhere for you, give us an idea of where that starting point is and where it all started.

Ah you need to speak to John about that. He writes all the stories down. Sure I tell him what happened. Though I suppose it all started really when I had left the department. I had been a detective with the New York Police Department for ten years, then I decided to try my hand as a private detective. It was then that John and I decided to start writing it down.

How do you envision your future?

Well John is currently writing up about when I first started. We hope that will be ready by April. Then John has made a start on another of my cases, so we shall see what the future holds.

Tell us where we can read more about you?
